Bastiaan van Apeldoorn (1970) obtained his Master’s degree (with distinction) in political science and international relations at the Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA). In 1999 he received (with distinction) his doctorate in the social and political sciences from the European University Institute in Florence. After having worked as postdoctoral fellow at the Max Plank Institute for the Study of Societies in Cologne, he joined the Department of Political Science of the Vrije Universiteit in 2000. Van Apeldoorn has published widely in the combined fields of International Political Economy and European integration studies, and is the author of Transnational Capitalism and the Struggle over European Integration (2002), as well as of several articles in amongst others the Journal of European Public Policy and New Political Economy.

In his work, Van Apeldoorn takes the increasing transnationalisation of social relations as an important point of departure. In past he has applied this perspective especially to the European Union and to the analysis of European socio-economic governance. As such Van Apeldoorn has worked on several issues within the transnational political economy of European integration, such as the role of transnational business elites - in particular the European Round Table of Industrialists (ERT) - within the integration process, the rise of a new competitiveness discourse and an associated 'embedded neo-liberal' European socio-economic order, and the debate on different varieties of capitalism within the transnational European arena. This work he now continues with research on the transformation of European corporate governance, in particular focusing on the changing content and form of corporate governance regulation, but also building upon previous research carried out at the Max Planck Institute on the transformation of ownership and control of Europe's largest companies. Beyond corporate governance and the EU, Van Apeldoorn is currently also writing about (the theory and history of) transnationalism more generally, and in particular taking into account its ongoing dialectic with interstate relations.

Van Apeldoorn has been one of the four co-applicants and is one of the current co-ordinators of the NWO-funded research programme on the Transnational Political Economy of Corporate Governance Regulation.
